‘Where Borneo Begins’ project aims to improve many rural postal services

KUCHING: “Whe re Borne o Begins” wi th a special postal code 94111 and recognition from Malaysia Book of Records now owned by Tanjung Datu Lighthouse has become the latest symbol of Sarawak sovereignty.

The lighthouse is a project of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Pos Malaysia that is aimed to strengthen the state’s sovereignty, prosper the people through the upgrading of postal services in rural areas and postal projects under Smart Community Programmes.

“Prior to this, several tourism postal projects were carried out at Mount Kinabalu, which is a post at 4,000 metres above sea level, Pulau Layang-Layang with submarine posts with a depth of 40 metres, Sultan Iskandar Mersing Marine Park and now being implemented at Telok Melano,” said Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia, Dato Jailani Johari in his speech during the launch of Tanjung Datu Sovereignty Programme launch and Kampung Telok Serabang Telecommunication Tower inauguration at Kampung Telok Melano Community Hall, Sematan on Monday.

According to Jailani, community posts have also been set up in the Lundu District including Community Postmen that serve Kampung Telok Melano and Kampung Telok Serabang to ensure that rural residents enjoy better postal services as the development of the Pan Borneo highway is expected to be completed in year 2020 which will connect the road from Sematan to Telok Melano.

At the same t ime he al s o stressed the digital communication service is very important to the rural population and as such the construction of two telecommunications towers in Kampung Telok Serabang is expected to be the catalyst for greater development in this area.

It is also capable of helping residents in the area to enjoy better digital communication access and utilisation of Internet facilities for the purpose of developing themselves through entrepreneurial activities in the Telok Melano area. Also present were state’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Tanjung Datu State Assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu.
