KUCHING: Alternative platforms that do not require internet connection could be utilised for learning in view of the closure of schools.
Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president Macky Joseph said this in response to many students in rural areas who are not able to participate in online classes due to poor internet connection.
He pointed out that educational channels on TV such as TV Okey — operated by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) — could be made use of as alternative learning platforms.
“Such programmes would enable students gain access to learning during this period,” he told New Sarawak Tribune today.
He also said other alternatives would be student materials such as textbooks and other means which they are able to access.
“Teaching and learning can be done both offline and online — thus, making education accessible for all, both urban and rural areas,” he added.
Macky also suggested that TVS could assist in airing educational programmes or recorded lessons.
On connection issues, he urged the concerned parties to provide free or subsidised internet data to pupils and teachers in line with the new norm in education.
“It is also important to have high-speed internet connection, for both urban and rural areas, during this crucial time” he said.
