KUCHING: The plaque at the 69-year-old WW2 Memorial Clock Tower in Jalan Padungan has been restored.
It was put up during a brief visit to the clock tower by Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, together with Kuching City South Council (MBKS) councillors and Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei today.
Wee said the installation of such plaques was one of the council’s moves to help preserve the historical site in areas under its jurisdiction.
The WW2 Memorial Clock Tower was constructed in 1951 as the first WW2 Memorial here.
However, in view of the congestion at the site for the ceremonial parade, a new WW2 Memorial Monument was rebuilt at Padang Merdeka in Mosque Road, leaving the clock tower as a symbolic WW2 Memorial Clock Tower.
The tower is also part of Sarawak’s history during the WW2’s Japanese Occupation from 1941 to 1945.
“As one of the two city councils in Kuching, we need to fully support this idea of conservation of historical sites for our future generation. It is one of our historic evidences and our future generation should cherish and conserve it,” he added.
