THE amendment to the State Constitution is in line with the spirit of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) to provide exclusive rights to Sarawakians in various state related matters.
Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya (PBB-Jemoreng) said the amendment would also strengthen Sarawak’s autonomy as well as its stance on MA63.
“The amendment would ensure that only those who have Sarawak connection or Sarawakian DNA become members of this august House.
“Only those who are related in blood and soul to Sarawak, those who are born in Sarawak and lives in Sarawak would usually be loyal to this state and knows its needs, and not outsiders,” he said when debating on the Constitution of the State of Sarawak (Amendment) Bill, 2020 today.
He said many Sarawakians were unaware that Article 5 of the Federal Constitution opened up the opportunity for Malaysians from Sabah and Malaya to contest in the State election.
“Finally, on the initiative of the GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) government, the door allowing Sabahans and Malayans to become members of this august House will be curtailed.
“The amendment provides for only eligible Sarawakians to become DUN members and people from anywhere else are prohibited from contesting in the state election.
“This is the nature of the GPS government that has always put Sarawak first and is willing to do anything to protect the interests of the people,” he added.
