MUKAH: An old sago factory chimney in the heart of the town has become a historical landmark — albeit an icon for this sago starch producing town.
The historic landmark is considered an object that marks important histories related to the lives of the people in Mukah back in the old days.
The chimney revolves around the story of sago palms growing in plentiful in the peat lands of the Rajang Delta.
In the 19th century, local community leaders amassed wealth from farmers who worked on producing sago starch by hands where sago factories such as the landmark facilitate the process of producing sago starch.
In the 20th century, the price of sago flour declined sharply and as a result, the factories were closed, leaving a 20-metre tall brick chimney — the Sago Factory Chimney.
The landmark located near Mukah Chinese Temple, eventually became a tourist attraction where visitors capture their memories as proof of visit to Mukah Town, now renowned for its umai (raw fish salad).
