KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 2 Malaysian tower runner Soh Wai Ching will attempt to beat the current Guinness World Record (GWR) Wednesday for the greatest vertical height stair climbing in one hour, in an effort to raise funds for the Malaysia Tower-running Association.

“There are numerous reasons behind this including promoting Malaysia to the world, promoting the sports itself…to get more people to take up the sport as well as to raise funds for our association’s activities for 2021,” said Soh, who is president of the association.

“Through this, I also hope that many more will continue to challenge the boundaries and eventually get this sport recognised and introduced in the Olympics,” he told Bernama Tuesday.

The 26-year-old, who is also Asia No.1, will be attempting to challenge current GWR holder Spanish athlete David Robles Tapia’s record height of 1.227 kilometres in an hour.

The attempt will see Soh running up 66 floors of the Four Seasons Place building in Kuala Lumpur at least four times within an hour.

In the run, Soh will make his way to the 66th floor of the building and take the lift to the ground floor, before running to the top again repeatedly from 9 pm to 10 pm.

Tower Running is a sport which involves running up tall man-made structures.

Usually, the races take place on the internal staircases of skyscrapers but the term can cover any foot race which involves a course that ascends a man-made structure. – Bernama
