KUCHING: Due to popular demand for October’s online design lecture series, Malaysian Institute of Architects Sarawak Chapter (PAMSC) will host another design lecture series this month starting this Friday.
This time, the lecture will feature four speakers from Malaysia and Taiwan. The format, however, will be similar to the one on October where it will comprise a 25-minute lecture followed by question-and-answer-session where all the participants are allowed to pose questions. All lectures will commence at 5pm.
This series of lectures is themed ‘Architecture of place’ in which the speakers will illustrate how they were able to recapture a ‘sense of place by injecting elements derived indirectly from the peculiarity of a particular place’.
Through a selection of their recent projects, the speakers will demonstrate how they do so by being loyal to local context, with respect to traditional craftsmanship and materials despite forces of mass commercialisation.
Every session will end with a virtual tour of a special building selected by the speaker; this is a unique part of the lecture.
The speakers from Malaysia are Mei Chee Seong, from ALM Architects in Penang and Tang Hsiao Seak of Tangu Architecture while the other two from Taiwan are Eric Chen, a Taiwanese architect and educator and Tey Tat Sing from Tetawowe Atelier.
Mei, an avid sportsman and urban sketcher, will speak about the cross-over of architecture and art in his works. His lecture, to be moderated by Ng Chee Wee and Wee Hii Min, will be sponsored by a local steel manufacturer Ecosteel Sdn Bhd. His lecture will kick off this month’s lecture series on Dec 4.
Tang’s lecture will be on Dec 11. It will be moderated by Formzero’s Lee Cherng Yih and sponsored by a local manufacturer and supplier of roofing products and systems, Amcan Sdn Bhd.
The third and fourth session of the lectures, to be conducted by the Taiwan speakers, are scheduled on Dec 18 and 24.
The lecture by Chen of Archiblur Lab on Dec 18 will be moderated by the USCI University Assistant Head of the Architecture School Teoh Chee Keong, with whom he had many student project collaborations with. The talk will be sponsored by Daitti Trading (Kuching) Sdn Bhd, a local building material supplier.
The last speaker, Tey will conduct the lecture together with his partner, Wong Wei Ping, who has been in the forefront of the Malaysian design scene.
Chia Shi Chee from Basic Design workshop in Johor Bahru will moderate the lecture, which will be sponsored by a local supplier of building materials, L&C Globalniga Sdn Bhd.
