LONG BEDIAN: A 47 year-old Penan man from Long Meraan longhouse in Sungai Magoh, has finally obtained his MyKad after years of waiting.

Niyek Baweng, had tried many times to apply for his MyKad, but failed.

One day, when he heard that Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau was going to be in Long Latei for a function, he immediately rushed there hoping to seek his assistance.

“I almost gave up but with the encouragement from my wife and thinking of the need for me to have MyKad for the sake of my children’s future , I made the effort to be at a programme held at Long Latei, where Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau was the guest-of-honour,” he said.

While there (Long Latei), Niyek was able to meet up with Dennis.

After about a year, Niyek finally obtained his Mykad, thanks to Dennis’s help who put the matter to bed.

On Tuesday (Dec 9), while at a coffee shop in Long Bedian, Dennis and his entourage was approached by Niyek and his wife, who conveyed their thank you and appreciation to Dennis for his assistance.

Dennis disclosed  that Niyek’s application was the result of a programme held under the National Registration Department (JPN)’s Special Mobile Unit (UKB) meant to help the rural communities in Telang Usan constituency register for their citizenship.

Fully aware of the crucial role of the JPN’s special mobile unit to the rural folks, Dennis is urging the Perikatan Nasional (PN) federal government to reinstate the UKB as it had proven to be the best way to reach out and  help the underprivileged and poor citizen from the rural communities obtain their citizenship status.

“I believe there is still pockets of very rural people in Ulu Baram who still  need the help,” he opined.
