Illegal online gambling
KUCHING: Crime busters have nabbed eight persons for involvement in illegal online gambling activities between Dec 7 and 12.
Kuching district deputy police chief, Supt Merbin Lisa said police successfully carried out seven raids on premises suspected to be involved in online gambling activities during the period.
“As a result, eight persons were arrested and they will be investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 which provides for a fine of RM5,000 to RM50,000 and jail term of up to 3 years upon conviction.
“All the suspects are currently under remand to facilitate police investigations,” he said.
Apart from that, four premises comprising grocery stores and eateries in the city which were suspected to engage in unlicensed online gambling activities, had their power supply cut off by enforcement team from Sarawak Energy (Sesco) and assisted by the police.
Merbin stressed that stern warnings were given to individuals to not carry out gambling activities without a licence and police would take actions under the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 on those involved in such activities.
“We will not compromise and will continue to monitor premises suspected to be carrying out such activity in Kuching,” he said.
