ASAJAYA: Two mega projects will be implemented in Kampung Tambirat here soon, namely Tambirat waterfront and a 950-metre embankment to withstand coastal erosion.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the two projects will complement the RM7 million Tambirat Hawkers Centre which would be completed in November next year.

“The two projects are currently in the tendering process and both will take about 24 months to complete once construction starts.

“The Tambirat waterfront will cost about RM31 million while the embankment will cost about RM35 million. All three projects will amount to RM73 million,” he told reporters after officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony of Tambirat Hawkers Centre at Kampung Tambirat here on Sunday (Dec 13).

The Asajaya assemblyman added the Tambirat waterfront would be a platform to hold popular water sports and serve as a vantage point for visitors to watch the biennial Samarahan Regatta at Batang Samarahan in Kampung Tambirat.

“It is designed to have two sides, one facing the hawker market and other the river as well as an ‘astaka’ (pavilion). I want the waterfront to be a permanent site for tourists and youth programmes such as skateboarding and so on,” he said.

Meanwhile, the construction of the 950-metre embankment was aimed at preventing coastal erosion.

“I want to protect the coastal areas from erosion. Thus, we will build certain river embankments similar to that of the waterfront … maybe not as pretty but enough to keep the village from collapsing into the river,” he explained.

Abdul Karim also hoped that these projects would be realised in the next two or three years.

He said existing water bunds from Asajaya up to the Sebangan Bajong area would be upgraded at a cost of RM750 million.

The minister, who is also the chairman of Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA), revealed that the state government had allocated a total of RM1.5 billion for the agency to develop Samarahan.
