KUCHING: Members of the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) welcome the announcement by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on using a certain formula to create jobs for the bumiputeras.
Its supreme council member Marichelle Livan Lah said such effort and initiatives by the government to help the bumiputera community is indeed welcomed and applauded especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This move, if properly implemented with an efficient task force, will be a great tool to empower Dayaks to be more confident and bold in their business,” she told New Sarawak Tribune today.
“I hope that the State Financial Secretary’s Office will devise a formula by taking into consideration feedback and opinions from the different Bumiputera business communities through DCCI and Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak (DUBS),” she said.
DCCI treasurer-general Bell Bernard Aggan opined that such formula to assist the bumiputera is timely.
“I think it is good that if 30 percent of jobs can be allocated for the bumiputeras especially in the areas of Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda), Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and other government-linked companies,” he said.
He also said jobs can also be allocated to members of the DCCI.
“We have qualified Dayak contractors and by allocating 10 or 20 percent of the jobs to DCCI members with the right formula, I think it will be able to benefit the Dayak contractors,” he said.
Bell added DCCI should also be given authority to identify and select which contractors are capable.
On Monday, Abang Johari, when officiating at the presentation of the Sarawak Energy Vendor Awards (Seva) 2020 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), said that he had instructed the State Financial Secretary’s Office to use a certain formula for certain jobs to be given to bumiputeras.
“From there, bumiputeras can compete among themselves to deliver their projects or services on time,” he said.
