KUCHING: One good thing to come of this year was the appointment of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister, said political analyst Datuk Peter Minos.
He said that despite being harassed and castigated at every turn by his political opponents, Muhyiddin had really saved Malaysia.
“He made very good and wise decisions in tackling Covid-19 and went all out to help struggling Malaysians via government support and finance despite many constraints.
“He is truly and sincerely concerned and he cares about the big and small men. This is exemplary and salutary. Without Muhyiddin around in this difficult and painful Covid-19 year, I shudder to think what would have happened to Malaysia and Malaysians,” he shared on his reflections on the ending year.
Minos said this year had been a year of pain and tribulations for both the nation and its people all because of the Covid-19 pandemic, with many losing their jobs, businesses, and incomes.
“The coming months or years of picking up the pieces and achieving full recovery will be tough and arduous. But Malaysians are noted survivalists and are resilient and will rise up and run again,” he said.
Minos, who is also Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman, said the coming Covid-19 vaccines next year would be greeted with much hope and joy.
“Once Covid-19 is gone, hopefully by mid-2021, our economic recovery will come about and life will gradually go back to normal,” he said.
He also said Sarawak would probably hold its state election in March as it must be held by June at the latest unless there was an emergency.
“With lots of talk on Sarawak having more funds from its own oil and gas resources, it is in the air that economic prosperity will come about, or at least more funds for progress and development,” he said, adding that this expectation was good as it would create hope and confidence.
“This is, of course, thanks to the state government, especially our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg fighting and working very hard on it all,” he said.
Minos said that with this potential wealth from oil and gas resources, Sarawak could have a smoother road to economically advanced and developed status.
“Certainly, we want to see our beloved Sarawak continuing to be peaceful, free from any racial and religious bigotry, with harmony among the people, and development going on unabated,” said Minos.
