KUCHING: 2020 has been a year of events that test the readiness, strength and preparedness of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in dealing with issues of public order and security of Sarawak.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail said this year, a few people had disparaged the efforts of the police in carrying out their duties.
“However, this does not break our spirit to continue uplifting the dignity of the force as one that is respected and provides the best service to the community in line with the theme of ‘Polis dan Masyarakat Berpisah Tiada’ for this year’s 213th Police Day celebration,” he said in a statement issued today.
He said this year had also been particularly interesting for the police force when it took up the responsibility of becoming part of the frontliner lineups beginning on March 16 during the first implementation of the movement control order (MCO) to curb the spread of Covid-19.
He added that other notable events which had a major impact on the Sarawak police included the passing of Assistant Superintendent Aldrin Gonda who worked as the Head of Narcotics Crime Investigation Division, Kota Setar District Police Headquarters (IPD), Kedah and Constable Nicholester Dadup Unggat.
“Although they worked in different states and districts, as a team, Sarawak police also feel sad over their departure, moreover as both were natives of Sarawak.
“We were also shocked by the departure of Sergeant Simon Laja who served in the Miri 13 Battalion General Operations Force and Sergeant (PB) Kemiang who served as the security guard for the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) who drowned after being swept away by a sudden strong gush of water while patrolling the area of Sungai Malana, Long Kerangan, Miri on Dec 4,” he added.
Aidi said Sarawak police were also shocked by the fire at the Belaga District Police Headquarters which affected the cops there in carrying out their duties.
“This proves that police personnel are always exposed to dangers and threats regardless of whether they come from criminals or the surrounding situations. However, with a sense of responsibility and trust, the police force will always be transparent and sincere so that the well-being of society in our country remains secure and protected,” he said.
Aidi added that the events in 2020 had encouraged the police to remain resilient and committed in facing any form of challenges in the coming years.
“On this occasion, I wish all police personnel, especially Sarawak police and all the communities in Sarawak a Happy New Year 2021.
“I pray that the well-being and tolerance in Sarawak will be preserved and cooperation between the various races enhanced at all times.
“I also hope Sarawak police will welcome 2021 with a strong commitment to continue providing the best service to ensure peace and security of our beloved Bumi Kenyalang.”
