“As of October this year, we have successfully completed 16 prosecution cases in Miri Court and five more are still pending. “I would like to emphasise that we will not compromise on any employers here who are registered with SOSCO and so far we still keep track of employers who still fail to do so.
“It is important to ensure that employees of a company get protection and benefits in terms of safety while performing their duties,” he told at a press conference held at the Perkeso office here Wednesday.
Also present were Executive Officer of Miri SOSCO, Mohd Yazid Mohd Hepni. Hendera said any employer convicted of an offense under AKSP can be jailed for up to two years and fined up to RM10,000 or both. “We urge and advise the company to register immediately so that compounding and prosecution can be avoided for the benefit of all parties.
“Prosecution is SOCSO’s last resort when dealing with offenders under AKSP 1969 and PPAKSP 1971,” he said. According to Hendera, most employers who fail to carry out these responsibilities are those who run small businesses, retail outlets, barber shops and from the logging and plantation sectors. He said every time they were asked why they were not registered with SOSCO most of them gave reason that they do not know.
