KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 10 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday (Jan 3rd), bringing the total number of positive cases to 1,140 cases.
State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said eight are locally transmitted cases.
“The eight cases were recorded in Miri with three cases, Kuching (2), Sibu (2) and one in Kapit. The remaining two are imported cases in Bintulu.”
The committee said three cases in Miri — Cases 1,135, 1,136, 1,137 — are Sarawakians who tested positive on Jan 2 and were close contacts with Case 1,116 which was reported on Dec 31.
“Two of them were asymptomatic while one started to experience coughs since Jan 1. All cases have been referred and admitted to the isolation ward at Miri Hospital.
On the two new cases in Kuching, Cases 1,131 and 1,132 were found positive after going for a screen test on Jan 2.
They were colleagues and close contacts of Case 1,119.
“Both are asymptotic and have been admitted to the isolation ward at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH),” it said.
In Sibu, SDMC said the two cases (Cases 1,138 and 1,139), are Indonesian brothers who were caught and found to have overstayed in Sarawak.
“They have been detained in Sibu since Dec 9, 2020. Investigations have shown that they have been staying in Sarawak for the past two years and admitted they have not returned to their original country ever since.
“Case 1,138 is a garbage truck driver operating near Sibu Jaya and Kanowit while Case 1,139 is a lawn mower and general worker who worked near Sibu Jaya.
“The two patients are asymptotic and have been admitted to the isolation ward at Sibu Hospital.”
Case 1,140 which was recorded in Kapit is an Indonesian man who worked at a road construction site.
The case is a legal foreign worker and has been in Sarawak since 2018.
Based on preliminary investigations, the case worked at several construction sites including Tatau and Bintulu prior working in Kapit.
“The case is a general worker at local construction company building roads leading to the Baleh Dam,” it said.
The case was screened on Dec 31, 2020 during an employee screening activity at the construction site and tested positive on Jan 2.
“The case is asymptomatic and has been admitted to the isolation ward at Sibu Hospital.
The SDMC also noted the emergence of a new cluster called the ‘Stutong Cluster’, bringing the total number of active clusters in the state to two.
“The Stutong Cluster has five cases, while the Mador Cluster has eight cases.
There were no recovery cases yesterday, bringing the total recovery cases in Sarawak to 1,071 or 93.95 percent.
There are 48 patients are still receiving treatment across the state
Twelve new persons under investigation (PUI) cases were recorded and one PUI is still waiting for lab test result.
