KUCHING: A number of hotels in Sibu have been identified as quarantine centres for Sarawakians returning from outside the state.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the quarantine centres in Betong will also be increased.

“We saw the reported case in Pusa today (Jan 5) that due to insufficient quarantine centres in Sibu, the case was given a Home Surveillance Order (HSO) and then tested positive.

“We also learned from the Mador Cluster that due to insufficient quarantine centres in Sibu, a case was allowed to undergo quarantine at home. He failed to adhere to the order and that led to the formation of the cluster,” he said at a press conference on the daily Covid-19 update today (Jan 5).

He said thus SDMC wants to avoid such incidents from happening again.

“Therefore, Sibu has made arrangements with Betong, Sarikei and Mukah, meaning that if those from Betong returning from Malaya or Sabah don’t have enough quarantine centres in Sibu then they will be quarantined in Betong.

“We will not allow them to undergo HSO because it is too dangerous,” he said.

Uggah also said the police department was investigating employers who are suspected of involvement in the case of bringing in illegal immigrants (Pati) into the state.

“Stern action will be taken against those who are irresponsible because their action will jeopardise the health of Sarawakians,” he said.
