KUCHING: Teachers are urged to always be in a state of readiness to perform their duties despite changes that may be made by the Ministry of Education (MOE) said, Ahmad Malie.
Sarawak Bumiputera Teacher Union (KGBS) president said the uncertainty of Covid-19 pandemic is a big challenge for everyone including teachers and educators, but they must ensure that the learning process is not disrupted.
“We are urging teachers to always be prepared to perform their duties with full dedication so that the education sector can continue to operate as planned and according to the ministry’s decisions.
“This pandemic is filled with uncertainties and it is posing teachers with many challenges. However, we have to accept the fact that we are living in the new normal and the education sector is not an exception,” he said.
He also said that parents and guardians must give their support in ensuring that learning takes place at home if the school session is postponed.
“If the ministry decides to postpone schooling session except for candidates who are going to sit for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM), we hope that learning will still continue at home for the others.
“Parents and guardians must support the teachers with online learning as this is to ensure that their children are not left out in their education,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) president Adam Parkash Abdullah said they are confident that the ministry will issue proper guidelines for students who are going to take their SPM and STPM examinations.
“We would like to see our SPM and STPM candidates to sit for their exams as soon as possible. They need this qualification to move on in their academic life,” he said.
Adam also added that the previous schooling session has provided a lot of experience for the teachers so any challenges to come will not dampen their spirit in carrying out their work.
“I am very sure that we have gone through the worst situation and have learnt a lot through that experience. There will be challenges that teachers will face but we cannot allow those challenges to dampen our spirit in doing our work.
“One of the biggest challenges is internet accessibility for teachers and students to be involved in online classes. However, we are confident that the state government is looking into this matter and we hope internet coverage will soon be accessible for all,” he said.
