KUCHING: The Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) said crime has decreased and under control.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail said from January to December 2020, 5,874 cases were reported, a 2.49 percent difference compared to 6,024 cases reported in 2019.

The threshold set by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) was 6,103 cases in the same period (Jan-Dec 2020) and Sarawak IPK achieved it by recording 5,874 cases.

As for the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), the department recorded an increase of 9.10 percent with 1,462 cases reported last year compared to 2019’s 1,340 cases.

“For CCID’s charge rate achievement, Sarawak CCID sits at second place in the country with 632 charge cases after Negeri Sembilan.

“For Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), the department recorded more arrests last year with 10,294 people arrested while 2019 recorded only 8,506 arrests.

“As for the actions on forfeiture of property under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988, the state NCID recorded seizures worth RM6,077,370.03, which is a 36.34 percent increase compared to 2019’s seizures worth RM4,457,411.99,” he told reporters at the Senior Police Officers Mess of Sarawak IPK here.

Aidi had also instructed both departments (CCID and NCID) to maintain the excellent momentum to produce the best impact in the fight against crime.

Sarawak CID chief SAC Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin Che Ali said his department recorded 5,089 cases involving property crime last year compared to 2019’s figure of 5,126 cases.

“Whereas for violent crimes involving injuries and not death, we recorded 785 cases last year compared to 2019’s figure of 898 cases.

“Apart from that, our department’s D9 and D4 units also launched operations to combat robberies, break-ins and thefts in 2020,” he said.

Salahuddin revealed that Sarawak, being the second contingent in combating gambling activities, saw a total of 2,608 Ops Dadu raids conducted throughout the state and the highest gambling raids involved online gambling with 1,932 raids.

“To ensure that gambling activities are eradicated, my department focused on two matters — power supply cut and opening Personal File (PF) on the gambling syndicates.

“The Sarawak contingent has carried out 860 power supply cuts throughout the state last year, compared to 2019’s figure of 204 power supply cuts. Miri recorded the highest power supply cuts with 207 last year.

“For PF to gambling syndicates, the department has opened 35 PFs in the state where six are for calling centre syndicates, 12 for online gambling syndicates, 13 for illegal lottery syndicates, three for cock-fighting syndicate and one for gambling inside a building,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) 2007, the CID recorded 21 cases last year where 12 were charged while eight are still under investigation.

Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said throughout 2020, his department carried out 665 operations across the state, an increase of 78 compared to 2019’s figure of 587.

From the total last year, 147 were carried out in Ops Mabuk where 199 individuals were arrested under Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987, which is driving or riding a vehicle with alcohol concentration exceeding the prescribed limit.

“Whereas for Ops Samseng Jalanan, 55 operations were carried out and 66 individuals were arrested. All have been charged and sentenced in court.

“Our department also made three arrests related to drugs last year — two cases of possessing drugs under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 in Kuching and Padawan and one case of testing positive for drugs under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act 1952 in Kota Samarahan,” he said.
