KUCHING: Sarawak has managed the Covid-19 pandemic well under the state Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), thanks to constant vigilance and hard work.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng gave the SDMC a pat on the back in his speech released today in conjunction with SDMC’s anniversary on Wednesday.

The anniversary, he said, marked another milestone in the committee’s lengthy war against the Covid-19 pandemic.

“On this very day in 2020, SDMC was tasked to undertake the single most important role in safeguarding Sarawak’s well-being by leading the fight against Covid-19. Since its conception, SDMC has maintained a high level of efficiency and efficacy in executing its responsibilities.

“SDMC has set up round-the-clock task forces as well as i-Alert which provides prompt information and updates pertaining to the pandemic through the Sarawak Disaster Information platform among others,” he said.

Wee added that SDMC had always been one step ahead which contributed to Sarawak outperforming the other states.

“Thanks to its remarkable foresight and efficient way of manoeuvring resources, we outperformed every state in the country. It was also during May 2020 that CovidTrace and QMunity tracing applications were created and launched. They allow for speedy contract tracing of communities and inform the public of potential pandemic zones or areas.

“SDMC has also supported and used these applications as tools to fight the pandemic. Even after a full year of exhaustion, the committee members remain steadfast in their course,” he said.

The mayor added it had become the duty of every citizen to share the burden and appreciate the sacrifices of SDMC along with the frontliners.

“As we extend our best wishes to SDMC and our frontline workers, we must continue to be more diligent in observing the standard operating procedures (SOPs) as it is the least we can do to honour them.

“A single step of carelessness might trigger the harshest of consequence which can undo all the good work we have achieved thus far. Happy anniversary, SDMC! We are all behind you,” he said.
