KUCHING: Maintaining political stability and focusing Malaysia’s energy and resources on fighting the pandemic are more important now, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan when commenting on the recent viral media posting by #KitaMintaLima.

The social media movement is seeking the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s intervention on the government’s policies amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Netizens are imploring the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to better manage the Covid-19 pandemic or change the present government.

It listed the five following demands:

•      Targeted and effective control orders

•      Full support to frontliners by channelling resources to fight Covid-19

•      Automatic bank moratorium and cash assistance to Malaysians throughout the MCO

•      Fair and equal enforcement of the National Security Council SOPs

•      Devices and internet data to all students immediately

“One should look at the current situation in Malaysia and assess whether replacing the current government is the solution that can drastically improve or solve the problems we are facing now,” said Kho.

“Although calling for Agong’s intervention through social media posting may not be the most effective channel, I understand the frustration and worry of the majority of netizens during this pandemic.”

She stated that the first two requests reflected most of the netizens’ demands and as a politician, she supported the requests.

“Personally, I think there is room for improvement for the current government to do better in fighting Covid-19,” she said.

On the third request, Kho said it would be perfect if the automatic bank loan moratorium was implemented.

“The national finance minister had implemented such initiatives before during the first movement control order (MCO). However, this requires the evaluation of the bank and nation’s financial situation,” she added.

On the fourth requests, Kho agreed out that the enforcement of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) should be consistent and equal in all the states of Malaysia.

“I support the fifth demand as no student should be left behind. The lack of internet and mobile devices during this pandemic has also been an issue even in most advanced countries,” she added.
