MIRI: Kampung Kuala Batu Satu fishermen in Kuala Baram and owners of nearby fish stalls are making money from debris and wood waste found around the boat landing in the village.
They collect the debris and wood waste, put them into plastic bags or gunny sacks and sell them for RM5 per bag. The debris and wood waste are used on agriculture farms.
Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin today visited the village to look at the clearing of the debris and wood waste, which stood more than a metre high at the fishing boat landing areas.
A JKR contractor used JCB backhoe excavators to clear the debris and wood waste.
Lee requested the excavator operator to remove the debris and wood waste and dump them at a number of locations nearby so that it would be easier for the fishermen and fish stall owners to pack them for sale.
The fishermen and fish stall owners thanked Lee for his assistance.
Based on JKR’s estimates, 250 tonnes of debris and wood waste were removed from the fishing landing areas today.
Lee also visited a nearby fish market to meet the stall owners. He was happy with the SOP compliance at the market.
With Lee during the visit were JKR deputy divisional engineer Stephen Ung, Ketua Kaum Kampung Batu Satu Mohamad Yusop Sulaiman, fishermen and stall owners.
