SEBUYAU: The people of Sebuyau are advised to give their full cooperation while the Batang Lupar Bridge is undergoing construction.
Infrastructure and Port Development Assistant Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said their cooperation was needed to ensure that works on the bridge could be carried out smoothly and also for their own safety.
“I advise the people here to not go into the bridge’s construction site and abide by the contractor’s advice.
“All the construction workers at the bridge project have their own standard operating procedures (SOPs) so that the project can be completed without any accident or disturbance to residents in the area,” he said when visiting the project site today.
He pointed out that although the earth breaking ceremony for the project has been postponed due to the pandemic, works on the bridge were progressing.
“For now, construction on the bridge has begun. First and foremost, the contractors are doing the earth filling and soil investigation.
“The bridge will be 4,844 metres long which will make it the longest river-crossing bridge in Sarawak and in Malaysia,” he added.
The project is fully funded by the state government. It will replace the ferry service crossing the river. It will include upgrading the existing coastal road connecting the bridge.
“This project is a way for the government to give back to the people. All the bridge projects will provide huge benefits to the people because they provide critical links for them to travel from one point to another,” he explained.
