KUCHING: An operation to search for and rescue a man who fell from a fishing vessel in Igan waters continued today (Apr 13).
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Bintulu acting director Maritime Commander Effendy Mohamed Fadil said the search scope, which entered its third day today, was narrowed by focusing on only 44.8 nautical miles around Igan waters.
He said a search and rescue forward base had also been established at the jetty of Kampung Pulau Igan.
“Three assets were involved in the search today (Apr 13), namely, a boat each from the Malaysian Maritime Department, Marine Police Force, and the State Fire and Rescue Department.
The search today was done by 21 officers and staff members. Also at the forward base were family members of the missing man.
Effendy said the sea and weather were fine and he hoped that the search would be facilitated with the discovery of new clues.
He added that nearby village fishermen’s associations (PNK) were also informed so that they could help in the search.
While reminding the maritime community to avoid going out to sea during bad weather, he said that should there be an urgent need to go out to sea, safety must always be a top priority, which means wearing safety jackets and taking other precautions.
