KUCHING: All universities, polytechnics and tuition centres in Covid-19 red zones throughout the state will be closed for 14 days effective April 20 until May 3.

This was announced by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement issued on Monday (Apr 19).

The committee said it includes all educational institutions under the Education Ministry (MOE) and all categories of private educational institutions registered with the MOE including international schools.

It noted that the list of educational institutions to be closed in red zones include kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, polytechnics, public and private universities as well as tuition centres.

“Only students who are sitting for the SPM and STPM examinations are allowed to attend school to take the exam. Please refer to the SOP (standard operating procedure) of each school,” it said.

Earlier today, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government has decided that all schools including nurseries and kindergartens that are in the Covid-19 red zones will be temporarily closed for 14 days effective April 20.

He said the decision was made in view of the number of infections reported in several schools located in Sarawak.

“For the sake of the health of the children as well as the community, the Sarawak government has made the decision to close schools in red zones for two weeks,” he said.
