KUCHING: There are no Ramadan bazaars in the state for the second consecutive year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Many food lovers miss the wide variety of food and drinks sold at the colourful bazaars.
The regulars to these bazaars comprise Muslims and non-Muslims.
Following are comments from non-Muslims on why they miss the Ramadan bazaars.
DESMOND MARKUS
I miss breaking fast with my Muslim friends. In the past, during the fasting month, we would break fast together. Sometimes, we, non-Muslims, also fasted. I miss going to the Ramadan bazaars with friends after work.
CINDY ERICA SYLVASTINE GELAU
I miss the Ramadan bazaars. I remember how I visited every bazaar just to find the “otak-otak” (fish custard) and Melaka cake that I love. Then I would go back to the university dormitory with my Muslim friends to breaking fast. I loved the Uptown Bazaar at Desa Ilmu and the Ramadan bazaar at Stutong.
LAI SUI CHENG
I like the special fried squids and grilled stingrays sold at Ramadan bazaars. I also miss the lively atmosphere in the Ramadan bazaar with various races buying food. I just hope the Covid-19 pandemic will go away and that the Ramadan bazaars can reopen next year.
DEANNA MICHELE
I miss the lively atmosphere of the Ramadan bazaars. I miss buying Air Tebu, Nasi Kerabu Ikan, Kuih Badak Berendam and food from Malaya such as Nasi Hujan Panas, Keropok Lekor, Sambal Tumis and many interesting cakes from Kelantan.
SARINAS LINUS PETER
I miss all the food sold in the bazaars. I used to buy a lot of food there and donate some to Muslim friends for the breaking of fast. I hope the closure of the Ramadan bazaars can reduce the number of Covid-19 cases.
