SIBU: The town centre and its nearby areas appear deserted following the implementation of conditional movement control order (CMCO) here which took effect on Wednesday night until April 26.
A random survey carried out in the city centre this morning noticed very few people and only several vehicles on the road while, most if not all, of non-essential businesses were not in operation.
The targeted areas under the special movement restriction order include Jalan Kampung Nyabor, Jalan Sentral, Jalan Wong Nai Siong, Jalan Market, Jalan Lanang, Jalan Khoo Peng Loong, and Jalan Maju which are usually among the busiest roads here.
In fact, most parts of the town, including the town centre appeared deserted.
On Tuesday (April 18), the Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee announced the districts of Sibu, Selangau and Kanowit would be placed under the conditional movement control order with strict enforcement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) following a drastic spike in the number of positive Covid-19 cases.
The enforcement of the CMCO started on Wednesday night and will end at 11.50pm on April 26.
All essential services are only permitted to operate at 50 percent capacity.
Operating hours are limited between 6am and 8.30pm while only three persons are allowed to travel in a vehicle.
Sports and leisure activities are strictly prohibited while religious and worship activities are regulated by SOPs provided by the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department for Muslims and the Unit For Other Religions (Unifor) for Christians and those of other faiths.
Restaurants, on the other hand, are only permitted to operate via takeaway or delivery services.
