SIBU: Sibu Hospital is currently congested due to the large number of Covid-19 patients being treated.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh revealed this to warn members of the public here who still refused to adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the implementation of the conditional movement control order (CMCO) with stringent SOPs starting today until April 26.
He was speaking during a live stream with SMC councillors on the essential service providers who were allowed to operate during the CMCO on the council’s official social media site today.
Ting revealed that many Covid-19 patients were sleeping on the floor because there were not enough beds at Sibu Hospital to accommodate them.
“Do the people of Sibu want this situation?”
This is due to our own failure to comply with the SOPs set earlier.
“What is happening is very sad. Imagine you or your family members sleeping on the floor,” he said.
Ting warned that the situation would worsen if the Covid-19 cases in Sibu continued to escalate.
He said on the first day of the implementation of CMCO, some of the businesses which were not on the list of essential services still wanted to operate.
“I remind you that the Covid-19 situation in Sibu depends on your own attitude.
“If we are still stubborn and refuse to comply with the SOPs, we will continue to be subjected to the CMCO for another 14 days after April 26.
“Of course, this will have an even worse impact, especially on the business community,” he said.
Ting urged the Sibu community to cooperate by strictly adhering to the SOPs for five days only.
He also advised the public not to leave their houses if there was no urgent matter.
“With the help of the public for five days now, at least we can reduce the cases. Our fate depends on these five days,” he said.
He explained that the decision to implement MCO was made on the advice of the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH) based on the daily cases recorded.
Ting also urged the government to expedite the Covid-19 vaccination for all SMC councillors as they were also frontliners who ensured SOP compliance in the town.
