BINTULU: A local unemployed man, 27, suffered major burns following a minor explosion from insulated wires he was burning to extract copper in Kampung Sebiew here at about 7.30pm yesterday.

Bintulu District Police Chief, Supt Zulkipli Suhaili said that as soon as they received the distress call, a team of investigators, including the Bomb Unit was dispatched to the location to verify the information.

According to him, the incident occurred behind the victim’s rented house, resulting in burns on both his hands and legs, neck and face.

The victim was then rushed to the Bintulu Hospital for medical attention. “Investigations are still ongoing but no foul play is suspected. I advise the public not to speculate on this incident,” he added.
