KUCHING: The iconic Cat Statue in Jalan Padungan here has been lit up to usher in Hari Raya Aidilfitri- Gawai Dayak celebrations.
A ceremony was performed by Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, MBKS deputy mayor Hilmy Othman and Cr Timothy Julius recently.
MBKS has been lighting up the Cat Statue yearly during every major festive celebration in Sarawak — Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Gawai Dayak, Deepavali and Christmas.
For this year’s double cheer, the Cat Statue has been dressed up in ethnic costume and its surrounding area decorated with Aidilfitri and Gawai elements.
Dr Sim reminded the public to celebrate responsibly and to adhere strictly to Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the authorities.
Meanwhile, Wee urged the public to adapt to the new norm when celebrating the festivals.
“Protect our families by registering for vaccination. We hope that all Sarawakians can be vaccinated as soon as possible so that we can keep our state safe from the virus.”
