PULAU BRUIT: A young woman who is visually impaired earned money to survive and to help her family at Kampung Betanak Pulau Bruit by threshing rice. Norhayati Salawi, in her early 20s was born with an impaired vision and is categorised as an OKU. She has been brought up in a poor family and is forced to work hard despite her condition.
Nevertheless, being the eldest of seven siblings she is keen in her work for the sake of her family’s welfare, knowing that putting food on the table is a must. In fact the family’s hardship has become a sort of inspiration for her to work harder for a living.
She and family members have to work hard and refuse to be too dependant on the aid by the Welfare Department (JKM) Daro.
“Though I cannot see and that my world is dark, I know my family is poor and suffering and as such I need to work hard for the sake of our survival,” said Norhayati.
“My younger siblings who are still in school need to buy books and other school items and I don’t want them to stop schooling. May be in the future they can bring our family out of poverty,” she pointed out when speaking to New Sarawak Tribune/Utusan Sarawak recently. Certainly this is a good example worth emulating.
