BETONG: Layar assemblyman Gerald Rentap Jabu has advised all Gawai celebrants to stay home and celebrate the festival with their loved ones.
He also urged them to use video conferencing to connect with distant relatives and friends.
He warned that group gatherings during Gawai could lead to a spike in Covid-19 infections.
“Current trends showed that uncontrolled gatherings or social activities would cause the virus to spread quickly.
“However, if we use a virtual approach, there is definitely no Covid-19 transmission.”
Rentap gave the advice after presenting minor rural project (MRP) grants to 16 Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) here today.
He had earlier on presented cheques totalling RM190,000 to PTAs of 11 primary school and five secondary schools.
The schools were SK Nanga Lawih, SK Nanga Spak, SK Saint Mark, SK Saint Peter and Saint Paul, SK Saint Bartholomew, SK Nanga Ajau, SK Nanga Passa, SK Abang Abdul Kadir, SK Saint Augustine Betong, SJKC Chung Hua Betong, SK Saka, SMK Ulu Layar, SMK Saint Augustine Betong, SMK Datuk Patinggi Kedit, Kolej Vokasional Betong and MRSM Betong.
Later on, Rentap inspected the roadblocks near Simpang Betong together with the Betong Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC).
Among those present were Betong Resident who is also the DDMC chairman Friday Belik and Betong Division health officer Dr Johnny Pangkas.
