KUCHING: In light of the severe Covid-19 situation, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching branch chairperson Datuk Lily Yong has urged politicians from Malaya not to enter Sarawak at this time.
“Do not come in. Wait until the problem is all over,” she stressed during a press conference held via Zoom today.
Noting that the current government was still rather new and inexperienced, she said it was understandable if they made mistakes or inaccurate decisions.
However, she urged them not to keep making many changes to the policies as this would confuse the people.
“But I feel that whatever they decide, Sarawak has to make our own decisions,” she said.
At the same time, she questioned the statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday, which said that stricter standard operating procedures (SOPs) would be imposed for economic and social sectors due to the rising Covid-19 infections.
“What do they mean by that? Is Sarawak going to follow this or will Sarawak have its own? The people on the ground are very confused and angry,” she said.
Yong also questioned why the business community was being targeted with stricter SOPs, pointing out that much of the spread of Covid-19 occurred due to private parties and gatherings.
“So I think if these stricter SOPs are to be enforced on the business group that is very wrong. Yes, some did not follow the SOPs, but most of them do,” she said.
On a separate matter, she brought up the issue of vaccinations for media personnel.
“Why are reporters, as frontliners covering the news on the ground, not being given the Covid-19 vaccination yet?” she questioned.
