MIRI: The city council (MCC) and Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on sustainable development goals (SDGs).

“This partnership to drive the SDGs is a practical approach to inculcate positive values in our students regarding the importance of balanced development,” said Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who witnessed the signing of the MoU in a virtual ceremony yesterday (May 28).

Lee speaks at the virtual signing ceremony.

Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said the council had been focusing on environmental issues and social development for years, and since 2019 it had upgraded its effort to be in line with the United Nations’ SDGs.

“The council hopes to have a better and balanced, developed Miri. One of the requirements for the SDG programmes is to engage the community and stakeholders. And we are very pleased to have RRSS as one of the partners in this endeavour,” he said.

He commended RRSS for always being forward-looking and having pioneering spirits.

“MCC is happy to collaborate with RRSS on these SDGs, besides many other collaborative programmes that are ongoing,” he said.

The council, he said, was looking forward to have programmes following guidelines provided by the SDGs, especially through global perspectives for mutual benefits.

Lee said RRSS is a progressive Chinese independent school that keeps up with the latest trends in teaching and learning in line with the current global education development, adopting a holistic and integrated education approach for the present and future needs of local and international students.

“I am extremely honoured to learn about the historic achievement of RRSS being admitted into the Global School Membership, which is an active unit under the UN’s Sustainable Development Solution,” he said.

He also congratulated the school’s concerted effort to promote the spirit of vigilance, resilience, adaptability, and dedication to provide education through an online home-based strategy so that the students would not be deprived of their privilege to learn during this Covid-19 pandemic. Also present to witness the signing ceremony were RRSS board of directors’ joint chairman Datuk Seri Law Kiu Kiong, RRSS chief executive officer Dr Pauline Ho, board members, and other guests.
