KUCHING: The Catholic Church in Sarawak has donated personal protective equipment (PPE) and KN95 face masks to medical frontliners.
Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching, Most Reverend Simon Poh, said since the onset of the pandemic last year, he had made an appeal through livestreamed Sunday Masses to procure supplies for hospitals.
“With the generous contribution from Catholics and friends throughout Sarawak, Malaysia and even overseas, we were able to raise the funds needed to procure 10,000 pieces of KN95 face mask and 6,200 pieces of PPE.
“Together with Bishop Joseph Hii of Sibu and Bishop Richard Ng of Miri, we offer these as our small gesture of support and prayer for the safety of our medical frontliners.
“May God protect and bless you and your family as you serve our community in Sarawak,” he said after handing over the PPE and face masks to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) here on Friday (June 11).
He added that the Church had written to Sarawak Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas regarding the donation from Catholics and Christian communities.
“I want to thank SDMC advisor Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and SGH director Dr Ngian Hie Ung for making the arrangement to receive the PPE gowns and face masks.
“Word of thanks also goes to Alan Tay and Kevin Chin, who volunteered staff and vehicles to transfer the 76 cartons of PPE gowns and masks from the church to SGH. Every little help contributes to the common good for all people.”
On another note, Rev Poh, who is the Association of Churches Sarawak chairman, encouraged Christians and friends of goodwill to give blood to save life.
“In public, maintain the safety standard operating procedures, wear masks at all times, minimise points of contact and social circles.
“By working together, we believe that will flatten the infection curve during this crucial week in Sarawak.”
