KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) is working with the Kuching Taxi Association to provide free transportation for vaccine recipients who do not have any means to get to the vaccination centres (PPV).

Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said this initiative was also to encourage more people to get vaccinated, while also helping the taxi industry, one of the hardest hit during the pandemic.

“The public can call us but do call one or two days earlier so that arrangements can be made.

“We will foot the bill. We will arrange for the taxi to come and pick you up, send you to the PPV and back,” he said when launching the initiative in Jalan Padungan here on Tuesday (June 15).

He said the programme would kickoff with 100 people and this would be adjusted accordingly if more required such service.

“Although we are grateful that the government does provide some financial assistance to the taxi drivers, but still they find it very difficult to make ends meet.

“Therefore, it is hoped that with such a programme, we can kill two birds with one stone – help the taxi drivers and get more people to be vaccinated.”

He also called on those yet to register for vaccination to do so. “Also, do not go out when it is not necessary. Stay at home, stay safe, stay healthy and stay alive.”
