718 new cases, two new deaths

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 718 new positive Covid-19 cases today (June 15), bringing the state’s case tally to 56,905.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said 426 of these cases, or 59.33 percent, were detected in five districts, namely Kuching, Sibu, Sri Aman, Tatau and Julau.

“The districts which recorded cases today (Tuesday) are Kuching with 157 cases, Sibu (80), Sri Aman (76), Tatau (57), Julau (56), Bintulu (41), Miri (40), Song (37), Pakan (34), Kapit (28), Subis (20), Meradong (14), Bukit Mabong (14), Lundu (14), Mukah (10), Kabong (9), Kanowit (8), Bau (7), Asajaya (3), Sebauh (2), Dalat (2), Sarikei (2), Selangau (2), Samarahan (2), Saratok (1), Telang Usan (1) and Serian (1),” it said.

“Of the 718 new cases reported, 54 people exhibited signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection during screening,” the SDMC added in its statement today.

The committee added that 638 cases were individuals who had been given quarantine orders.

Providing a breakdown on the 718 new cases, it said 465 were individuals who had contacts with positive cases, 172 were linked to existing active clusters, 45 were from other screenings at health facilities, 35 were from symptomatic individual screenings at health facilities and one involved a person who had returned from Iraq (Import A).

Two new deaths

The SDMC said there were two new Covid-19 deaths today (Tuesday), raising the state’s Covid-19 death toll to 358.

It said the 357th death was that of a 75-year-old local man, originally from the Pakan district, who passed away at the Sarikei Hospital.

The man tested positive for Covid-19 on June 5 and had high blood pressure, heart disease and gout.

The 358th death was of  a 61-year-old local woman, originally from the Sibu district, who died at the Sibu Hospital.

The woman tested positive for Covid-19 on May 27 and had high blood pressure and dyslipidaemia.

717 recoveries

The SDMC said that 717 new cases had recovered and had been discharged from hospitals and Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRCs) throughout the state.

It said 249 of these cases were discharged from the Kapit Hospital and PKRC, the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and PKRC (124), the Miri Hospital and PKRC (110), the Bintulu Hospital and PKRC (93), Mukah PKRC (74), the Sibu Hospital and PKRC (43), the Sarikei Hospital and PKRC (9), Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC (9), Serian PKRC (4) and Betong PKRC (2).

“This brings the number of recovered and discharged cases thus far to 46,721, or 82.10 percent of the total number of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak,” said the SDMC.

It added 9,709 active cases were being isolated and treated at hospital wards and PKRCs throughout the state.

“A total of 718 new persons under investigation (PUIs) had been reported,” said the committee.
