JULAU: Police rounded up 11 persons for taking part in an illegal cockfight during a raid at an open field of an oil palm plantation here last Saturday (June 26).

Acting on information, personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted the raid at Mile 15, Jalan KJD around 3pm.

Julau police chief DSP Andam Sulin Brayun said the place is believed to be an illegal cockfighting arena.

“A total of 11 individuals comprising 10 men and a woman, were arrested for taking part in the cockfight.

“Also seized were five live fighting cocks, five dead ones, a scale, a cardboard with written numbers, a chicken spur blade, a table and some cash,” he said, adding that the arrests and seizures were made under Section 3 (1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Ordinance 1963.

He stated that the suspects aged between 36 and 72 years, were also issued compounds totalling RM16,500 for violating the standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the movement control order (MCO) 3.0.

The compounds were issued under Regulation 17 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations (No.3) 2021 for taking part in a prohibited activity during MCO.

Andam stressed that the police would not compromise with any party who takes part in such activities and stern actions would be taken.

“Hence, the public are reminded not to engage in cockfighting activities and always abide by the rules as such activity can cause the spread of Covid-19,” he said.
