KUCHING: Sentiments which suggested Malaysia was moving towards a failed state should be looked at thoroughly and from all aspects, said a political analyst Prof Datuk Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman.

He said though the country was facing multiple crises resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, it was still economically and financially stable.

The government was still able to provide various forms of aid to help its people.

The government’s delivery system was also functioning well and there was no sign that the system was on the brink of breaking down, Mohd Fadzil added in response to an opinion published by Bloomberg on July 9.

He said the country was generally still safe and protected and the war against Covid-19 was still ongoing and intensified throughout the country and could not yet be considered as lost, he added.

“Perhaps the results are not yet visible but if the people can provide close cooperation and focus more on their respective roles by adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOPs), we will definitely win instead of just continuing to label our own country as a failure without any firm commitments, “he said.

Mohd Fadzil, who is also the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Leadership and Development) of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), did not deny there were weaknesses in managing and making accurate and fast decisions in some ministries.

However, he stressed that they did not reach a level to be labelled as failures.

“The people must understand that if we continue to accuse the country of failing, it gives a picture and shows that our country seems to be out of control in all aspects when it is not that bad.

“Such an image will definitely worsen Malaysia in the eyes of the world,” he said.

Mohd Fadzil said worse scenarios were happening in other countries and the fact was that Malaysia was not as bad as touted. It was still in control and capable.

He added that when the country was being hit by Covid-19, it was best for all parties to set aside and stop spreading political sentiments of hatred to the people.
