SIBU: A former prisoner’s attempt to run from the police with a stolen truck in Sibu Jaya was short-lived as the police managed to arrest him early this morning.
District police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said that the 21-year-old suspect was previously jailed for three years for stealing a car in 2016.
“He was apprehended by a patrol team while attempting to flee in the truck at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman at 3am.
“Earlier, at around 12.23am, the 47-year-old complainant had received a call from an alarm company informing that a suspicious individual was wandering behind his shop.
“The company later sent a closed circuit television (CCTV) footage to the complainant which showed that the company truck, which belonged to the complainant’s brother, had been driven away by the suspect,” said the police chief.
Acting on the complainant’s information, police managed to arrest the suspect and bring him to a police station for further actions.
Stanley added that during interrogations, the suspect failed to produce a valid identity document. He said he was only using the truck to go sightseeing.
“The suspect also claimed that the door of the truck was not locked.
“He added the keys were left inside the truck and that he started to drive out of Sibu Jaya after turning on the truck,” said the police chief.
The suspect will be remanded for three days to facilitate investigations under Section 379A of the Penal Code and Regulation 25 (1) (n) of the National Registration Regulations 1990.
The suspect was also sent to the Sibu Hospital for a Covid-19 swab test which turned out negative.
The suspect is now detained at Sibu Central Police Station lock-up.
