MUKAH: 189 illegal immigrants were detained by Sarawak Immigration Department in an operation codenamed “Ops Sapu” here early yesterday morning. The operation, which began at 5.00am, was carried out by 72 operation officers led by Deputy Chief of the Kuching Immigrat ion Depar tment Enforcement Division, Rosliah Binti Kassim.
In the operation which was carried out in a workers’ housing area at a construction site of the Balingian Coal-Fired Power Plant here, 367 people of various nationalities were checked. Among them were three local men, 155 Indonesian men and three Indonesian women, 127 Chinese nationals, one Sri Lankan, 43 Indian nationals, seven Filipinos and 37 Bangladeshis.
During the operation, 189 individuals were suspected of breaking the laws under the Immigration Act. Those detained comprised 105 Indonesian men and three Indonesian women, 16 Chinese nationals, a Sri Lankan man, 33 Filipino men and 25 men from Bangladesh.
119 men and two women who were nabbed were investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 because they could not produce any valid passes or permits.
They comprised 65 Indonesian men and two Indonesian women, 16 Chinese nationals, 16 male Indian nationals, four Filipino men and 18 Bangladeshis.
Meanwhile, 40 Indonesian men and an Indonesian woman, three Indian nationals and two Filipino men were arrested under Section 15(1)(c) of the same Immigration Act for overstaying in the state.
