PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today spent about three hours meeting top leaders of component parties and partners of Perikatan Nasional (PN) at Perdana Putra here.
Among those present were Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman, and MCA president and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Free Malaysia Today news portal reported that however, none of the leaders issued any statement after the meeting, despite attempts by the media to get them on record.
Members of the media had gathered outside the gates in the hope of getting comments from the leaders. Despite being pressed on, these leaders apologised for not being able to reveal what had been discussed, FMT reported.
Earlier, it was reported that Muhyiddin was expected to meet coalition leaders aligned to him after the weekly Cabinet meeting.
Among the items believed to be up for discussion was a plan to bring forward the September parliamentary sitting to next week and to dissolve Parliament.
The meeting was believed to be connected to the latest political developments in the country.
Speculation has been rife that Muhyiddin has lost majority support following Umno’s decision to retract support for the PN-led government.
FMT quoting reports, said 15 MPs from Umno had withdrawn support for Muhyiddin and his administration either through public or statutory declarations (SDs).
The opposition bloc is said to have the backing of 105 MPs now from Pakatan Harapan, Pejuang, Warisan, Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), and Muda.
With the 15 MPs from Umno, those against Muhyiddin make up 120 out of the total 220 MPs, leaving the prime minister with only 100.
Two seats – Gerik and Batu Sapi – remain vacant following the death of the two MPs late last year.
Muhyiddin had planned to gauge his support via a confidence motion next month when the first meeting of the Fourth Session of the 14th Parliament commences on Sept 6.
