KUCHING: Serving as federal Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Minister for the past 17 months has been a meaningful experience, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Nanta, who is also Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general, said although the resignation of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin would impact the country’s administrative system, he believed that the difficult period would be overcome.

“Leading this ministry at a time when the country is hit by the pandemic was very challenging, given that this situation has never been faced by not only our country, but countries around the world.”

He added that various challenges were faced, especially the supply and price problems of essential goods, including face masks, as well as panic buying.

“Having said that, I would like to express my appreciation to all industry players in the trade and retail sector who often provide constructive feedback to help find ways to resolve various issues.

“The open door policy that I often emphasise has given an opportunity to many parties to give their opinions to help revive the country’s economy.

“Such involvement and openness personally also gave me new knowledge about the ins and outs of the country’s domestic trade, distribution and retail industry.

“Furthermore, I am also proud that to some extent, I was able to help Sarawak get the Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) Regulatory Exemption in the state, obtaining permission for Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Energy Sdn Bhd to become an oil company in Sarawak as well as assist in resolving the petroleum sales tax issue involving Sarawak and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas).”

Nanta said there were still many more plans that he would like to implement, if given a longer period of service.

“Nonetheless, I agree with the current situation that is plaguing the country at this point. Hence, I would like to apologise for all my shortcomings and weaknesses.

“I believe that all top officers and staff of KPDNHEP will continue to give their best service in the interest of the people and the country.”
