KUCHING: Only Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah will determine the new person to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister, says Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
“We, under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), leave it entirely to the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to appoint a new Prime Minister,” the PBB vice-president said when commenting on GPS’ support on the appointment of a new prime minister.
The nation’s political landscape is in turmoil following Muhyiddin’s resignation as the eighth prime minister just recently after losing the majority of MPs’ support and with bipartisan cooperation proposals that did not receive the support of political parties.
GPS is a coalition of four local Sarawak parties with 18 parliamentary seats.
Of this number, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) has 13 seats; Parti Rakyat Sarawak and Progressive Democratic Party, two seats each; and Sarawak United People’s Party, one seat.
At the same time, Dr Abdul Rahman said that GPS was currently fully focused on combating the Covid-19 pandemic instead of playing politics.
“The Sarawak government under GPS is fully focused on the vaccination programme in efforts to achieve herd immunity among the people of the state.”
