KUCHING: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is currently identifying and preparing several venues as Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRCs)

SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said that it was in view of the increasing number of positive cases in the district.

“We need to be prepared as the surge in cases will require more of such centres.

“This morning we are checking on several schools as possible PKRCs,” he said after visiting SMK Tabuan Jaya and the SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg today (Aug 21).

He stated that all positive cases in Categories 1, 2, and 3 that are not too severe will be placed in the centres where they will be cared for and monitored by doctors and nurses.

“Meanwhile, the more severe cases in Categories 4 and 5 will be admitted to hospitals,” he said.

During the school visit, Dr Khairul Rezzuan informed Uggah that the Kuching District now has 10 PKRCs with 2,062 beds.

“We are looking at opening a few more which will give us another 1,356 extra beds and we hope to gradually increase the centres to give us a targeted 3,828 beds.

“In addition, for areas outside the Kuching District like Lundu, Bau, Samarahan, Simunjan and Serian, we are targeting for a total of 2,023 beds. These would give us a total of 5,851 beds in the southern zone,” he said.

Uggah also conveyed his gratitude to the state Education Department for allowing SDMC to use a few schools as PKRC in the district.

“Indeed, this is a very big help to SDMC,” he said.

Also present during the visit were SDMC advisor Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian; Deputy State Secretary Datuk Ik Pahon; Education Department director Dr Norsiah Suhaili; Deputy Director of the state Health Department Dr Rosmawati Ariffin; and Kuching Resident Sherrina Hussaini.
