KUCHING: The Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Blood Bank is seeking cooperation from donors who have been exposed to close contact or patients of Covid-19 or have been confirmed Covid-19 positive after donating blood to contact them.

Donors who have been affected can contact the blood bank through 082-276797 (counter) and 082-276795 (Public Relations Unit) on working days or its officer via phone call or WhatsApp if after office hours at 010-8578909 (Borhan).

“They can also direct message us on our official Facebook page (Blood Bank Hospital Umum Sarawak). They must provide the following details namely the date and location of blood donation, full name, identification card and mobile number.

“We will be taking follow up actions and contact the blood donors affected, they must provide a clear explanation to the officers to facilitate the matter. All information is confidential,” it said in a statement today.

The SGH Blood Bank urged the blood donors to cooperate on this matter as it is to ensure that the safety of the blood that will be given to patients.

At the same time, it also called upon members of the public who are healthy to come forward for blood donation regularly every three months.

“Blood donation activities are included in the essential services, so the public does not have to worry about coming to donate.

“They must ensure that they strictly adhere to the standard operating procedure (SOP) and take precautions throughout the duration at the blood donation location,” it said.

It expressed gratitude and appreciation to blood donors who have contributed as the SGH has managed to maintain a safe level for its blood supplies compared to other states during this difficult time.

“However, this may change if the use of blood increases due to the daily demands for emergency cases, road accident cases, fire incident and daily supply every week for patients with Thalassemia and cancer.

“The lifespan of a blood bag is between 35 to 42 days while the other components such as platelets can only last for five days.

“Therefore, it is very important for the community to continue to provide support by donating blood so that the daily operations of the SGH will not be affected and most importantly, in the efforts to save someone’s life can be continued,” it added.
