KUCHING: The Election Commission (EC) has been urged to implement Undi 18 as soon as possible.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said when the federal Cabinet had agreed to lower the voting age from 21 to 18, the EC should have arranged a process for these teens to be able to register as voters in the general, state or by-elections.
“They must be allowed to be registered first only then they can vote. That is the main prerequisite to be a voter.
“This is the job of the EC. They must carry out this task (Undi 18 implementation) as soon as possible,” said the Asajaya assemblyman in a video message posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday (Sept 7).
Abdul Karim, who is also Minister of Youth and Sports, said that he was not surprised to see those aged under 21 expressing their views in the media calling on the EC to implement the Undi 18 the earliest by year end.
“So, my hope is that the EC, as the commission responsible for determining the election process in Malaysia, can organise and carry out that responsibility well,” he said.
