KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing has reiterated that the tabling of the Anti-Party Hopping Bill was necessary.
He said the tabling of the Bill — to prevent elected representatives from betraying the trust of voters — was embarrassing but needed.
“The tabling of this Bill is a public acknowledgement that our elected representatives do jump around looking for greener pastures or bigger ponds.
“However, the tabling of party hopping in Parliament is needed. And if our MPs cannot put their moral standing under check, let the laws check their moral standing.
“The end result is that we will have a stable government,” he said on Tuesday (Sept 14).
Masing, who is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak president, said this while agreeing to Sarawak United People’s Party secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting’s recent remarks that welcomed the parliamentary and government administrative reforms, among them, the tabling of the anti-party hopping law.
“It will further prevent or minimise political corruption by stopping elected representatives from hopping from party to party for their own interests and cause political turmoil and uneasiness,” said Ting.
