KUCHING: The establishment of Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) proves that the Sarawak government is mindful of all races and religions.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office for Islamic Affairs and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said issues involving religion should not arise in the state because no individual in Sarawak is prohibited from practising his/her faith.
“From time immemorial, Sarawak has been a pioneer of unity and religious freedom. Taking the construction of worship houses into account, all of the religious houses are built beautifully in the state.
“Even before the establishment of Unifor, we in Sarawak have practised a high spirit of tolerance between races.
“Its establishment has further strengthened cooperation, especially in the aspects of development and economy,” he added.
He noted that issues involving religion would normally come from a small group and not the majority of Sarawakians.
“Hence, Sarawakians, especially the youth, must continue to strengthen the unity that has been inherited since time immemorial,” he advised.
Recently, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said that Sarawak would not entertain elements that contradict the guarantee of religious freedom.
He assured that under his administration, initiatives were also implemented to assist non-Muslim religions in the state.
