KUCHING: Malaysia Day should be celebrated by all states in Malaysia rather than just Sabah and Sarawak.

“We become Malaysians after the formation of our federation. Prior to Sep 16, 1963, the word ‘Malaysia and Malaysian’ did not exist at all,” said political analyst Associate Professor Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

He added that the day is both special and historical and should be celebrated by all Malaysians, and not confined to the people of Sabah and Sarawak.

Another political scientist, Professor Dr Jayum Jawan of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), thinks it is important for Malaysians to embrace the historical date.

“Fifty-eight years ago on Sept 16, Malayans, Sarawakians and Sabahans came together to build this country,” he said.
