KUCHING: The public, especially in the western and central parts of Sarawak, are advised to be prepared and remain vigilant in view of the coming transition phase of the monsoon winds expected to begin from Sept 24.

This phase was rumoured to last until early November, which marks the end of the southwest monsoon since May 19.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said the monsoon transition is said to occur especially in the evening in most areas on the west coast and interior of the Peninsular Malaysia, west Sabah as well as west and central Sarawak.

The weather condition has the potential to cause flash floods as well as damage to unstable structures.

“In the transitional phase of the monsoon, the country will receive weak-wind conditions from various directions.

“This may cause thunderstorms and (it usually) brings heavy rains and strong winds in a short period of time,” he said in a statement.

Helmi advised the community to be more vigilant during this period and always be on alert to the weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia.
